Web Design Elements You Need To Avoid Having On Your Site
As a net designer, you need to pattern your web sites to give your guests the greatest ease of use, the greatest impression and most essential of all a welcoming knowledge. It doesn’t matter if you had the greatest product inside the whole world — if your website is poorly done you won’t be in a position to sell even just one copy of it since guests is going to be driven off your website by the lousy design.
When I’m talking about a “good design”, I’m not only talking about a excellent graphical design and style. A professional web style is going to be able to point out that there are lots of components which contribute to a very good web site style — accessibility design and style, interface or layout design and style, user expertise pattern and of course the most straightforward, which is graphic layout.
Hence, I have highlighted some features with the worst internet designs I’ve come across. Hopefully, you is going to be in a position to compare that against your own website as being a checklist and if anything on your site fits the criteria, you must know it is high time to take serious action!
1) Background music
Unless you are running a web site which promotes a band, a CD or anything at all related to music, I would genuinely advise you to stay away from putting looping background music onto your site. It might sound pleasant to you at first, but imagine should you ran a big website with hundreds of pages and everytime a visitor browses to an additional page on your internet site, the background music starts playing again. If I were your visitor, I’d just turn off my speakers or leave your site. Moreover, they just add to the website visitors burden when viewing your internet site — users on dial up connections will need to wait longer just to view your site as it’s meant to be viewed.
2) Additional large/small text size
As I said, there’s far more to internet layout than purely graphics — user accessibility is a single huge part of it too! You must style the text on your internet site to be legible and reasonably sized to enable your website visitors to read it without straining their eyes. No matter how excellent the content of your web site or your sales copy is, if it is illegible you won\’t be selling something!
3) Popup windows
Popup windows are so blatantly employed to display advertisements that in my mind, 90% of popup windows are not worth my attention so I just close them on instinct everytime each one manages to pass through my popup blocker (yes, I do have just one like quite a few users out there!) and, well, pops up on my screen. Imagine if you had a quite significant message to convey and you put it in a popup window that gets killed most of the time it appears on a visitor’s screen. Your internet site loses its function instantly!
In concluding this article, let me remind you that like a webmaster your job would be to make sure your website does what it’s meant to do effectively. Don’t let some minor mistakes stop your site from functioning optimally!

Thanks Kevin for yet another informative blog post. I have been enjoying every single of your blog posts. Keep up with your great work
I really like what you write about here. I try and read your blog every day so keep up the good posts!
Very informative, I have been enjoying every single of your blog posts, you always add new things
This is a good article specially now that Google has incremented the web site speed factor.
Pop-up windows are very annoying. Something else that is really difficult on the eye is different fonts. It just looks amateurish…
I always laugh when I stumble upon a blog with background music on it. Why they ever though that was a good idea, i\’ll never know.
Great blog post, and I’m glad to finally see someone pointing out just how terrible background music is for adding to a website. The pop up ads are just as bad. Does anyone really click on those by accident? Getting rid of both is definitely the way to go if you want a respectable site that can make some good coin.

Oh I hate those sites that have music and I don’t know how to turn it off so I end up just leaving the site. I wish tho I could find help on getting good headers designed for wordpress. I’ll design something and upload it and one time it will work and then I think I do it exactly the same and the next time the header will load but the pictures are gone. I end up spending so much time on this but I would like a nice looking site.
Thank you Kevin. I’d also add an appropriate colours selection accordingly to the colour theory, so the graphic design attract users and does not ‘hurt’ their eyes.
I hate music background, they are really annoying! And hopefully, we all have a pop up blocker to avoid ads! I would also add another thing to avoid: having too many ads in the website, it will hurt the eyes of the readers and they will leave the website immediately!

It’s interesting you are talking about pop up windows because on my gold investment blog http://www.goldminersresearch.com
I inserted a widget I found online and it was spamming popups to all of my visitors it wasnt until a visitor actually told me that I found out that the widget was doing it.
So, I speak from experience when I say popups are like a virus
I would add flash animations to the list
they are annoying

Many sales pages use the pop ups that come on when you click to leave. They irritate me as much or more than pop ups when I am trying to read the page
I would also add that in general anything that will slow down the loading of your website. Certain plugins can have an adverse efffect on your load times. Additionally depending on how you format your images and how often you use them as well as videos can play a huge part in how your website runs on the visitors end. Keep these things in mind as great web design is often a delicate balancing act of creating design that is visually appealing as well as functional.

I am be in agreement with your ideas and will deeply look ahead to you for these updates. Saying thanks will not very soon be enough, for the outstanding accuracy in your writing.
pop up pages are such a No No! some research would show they ‘can’ be effective but definitely in the expense of user experience.
in some cases, this can be used. just try not to abuse it
Thanks for sharing all this with us. As i am web designer and a new one so i really need some good tips that come in handy when designing a website. So thanks again and i’ll be to read some more….
Thank you for the advice and tips.

Totally agree with background music and a popup windows. Music slows the loading of your site that will drive away visitors, and popup windows are just annoying.

Thanks for letting us know about the important elements that are needed to be avoided while designing a website and i am sure that these are the mistakes that every new or inexperienced designer used to do, especially the one you have pointed out which is ” Background music ” which really destroys a website image unless its not a musical website…
First of i want to thank for sharing the information with us, u said it right that if their is no need for background sound dont add it,text in a website should be of appropriate size, multiple popup windows sometimes becomes hectic.Blog is very helpful for a new web designer.
The one thing that drives me away from a website is when a video starts playing automatically. I like videos but I want to control when I view them. Background music is annoying, but I just turn off the volume.
These things are not really recommendable in any business websites, especially when you are caring about the professional look of the site. Thanks for the nice post.
Thats a very nice post and it seems that these tips should one kept in his mind in order to avoid mistakes that can affect his work and may not be as productive as the designer wants it to be. Thanks for the post….
There’s many different aspects to web design and they’re all important to get right. They all need to be integrated together to produce a quality finished product.
Having pop-ups on your site, yes can increase the effectiveness of your advertising. But think twice because what you may not notice is that you’re also driving your visitors away.

Thanks for writing this. I really agree that some not mp3 related websites should not put music in teh website because it is annoying. Great post.
Very good points, expecially on “uncolicited” background music, it’s bad in two ways. First, is very irriating for a visitor, and second, it puts a sserious load on your hosting server, especially when you site attacts lots of visitors.
I would also add one thing that irritates me as a site visitor: unsolicited flash advertisements that won’t stop until they finish. Usually they achieve the effect of a site being immediately left =)

Background music in some sites are really pissing me off. I used to have head set while Im surfing the net, and when I opened a website that has a background music, I want to slam my pc. I dont know why. They should not put music into it.
I really appreciate your effort in sharing this valuable tips in web designing. I am currently taking up an online degree in web designing and this post is certainly a big help for me. Thanks a lot for sharing this additional info about web designing. Keep it up!

Very informative post you have here! I agree that with those tips, your domain or webpage will be great. I can see some of the websites with features such as background music and pop up windows seem not to last long. For me those are kind of annoying. Thanks for the share! Perfect for those who are planning to build a website but don’t know how and what to include in it. More Power!
I just hate those site which plays music on main page. Ahhh!
Flash Animations recently posted..Blogging Time!!
Yeah! I really agree with what you’ve posted Kevin. In making a website one must consider somethings that there are advantage and disadvantage in a web design. It is true that we need to avoid these 3 things in in our web page design its because it may cause confusion to our readers. Aside from that putting these in your web page will cause that the loading will be slow since it is a heavy document or file. It is better that our web page is simple but it is understandable…. Thanks for your post!
Pretty cool post. It’s really very nice and useful post. Thanks for sharing these great words…..
i like your site very wonderfull
lovely blogs ……….
i hate of pop up window even myself do understand that the useful of pop up . But i think that most of the user do allow their browser to automate blocked all kind of pop up.
pop up window will make they feel that insecure to view this site and look like spam so they will bounce away.
A huge size of photo, media, flash graphic will cause your website loading slow . Once your loading time is more than 3 seconds, i pretty sure that you will get a huge bounce rate which more than 60 %.
keep this keywords in mind. Kiss.
Keep
It
Simple
Stupid
Using a background music on a corporate site or any business site doesnot look professional. Thanks for sharing some excellent points. Everyone must keep these points in mind to make a professional and good quality website

Very true. I also hate those sites who play stupid sounds and music when we open there home page. They look really pathetic.
I found pop up windows the most annoying web design elements and frankly speaking, I never read the content of a pop up window. They were once effective web marketing tools but they are not effective anymore. They are just a nuisance.
